Meet Rene Lopez

Rene's Story

I am a 3rd generation Arizona native, growing up in a suburban Mesa home, where my parents still live. The son of a Heavy Mechanic Welder and a working homemaker, I graduated from Dobson High School in Mesa, attended Maricopa Community College, and went on to graduate from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, specializing in Direct Energy Conversion.

Following my college graduation, I earned a Commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) for the United States Navy in 1995, where I served as a Cryptologic Naval Officer stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. I had many adventures during the four years and eight months of service in the Navy, working with Navy Special Operations and operating as a submariner.

Even though I have traveled extensively as a Naval Officer and a Project manager in the Telecom, Energy (Oil and Gas), and IT industries, I have always called Arizona and the southeast Valley home, moving back to Chandler in February of 2007.

I began my invovlement in the community when I returned to Arizona, and I served on the Chandler Parks and Recreation committee prior to being elected to the Chandler City Council in 2014.

I have been married to my wife Jessica for 21 years and we have two great kids, Brianna (19) and Andrew (16).

Prior to my election to City Council, I explained to our children about the sacrifices we would have to make for my campaign. I told them, it is because I believe I can help make a difference, and I hope they will do the same when they are older. That with time and passion, I can help maintain a small and effective city government in Chandler, while building for our children’s future and maintaining that same rural, small town lifestyle we all enjoy.
